Interview

Demetra and Bianca

Demetra and Bianca are a female DJ duo. Young, talented, and full of energy, they welcomed us into their recording studio in the Tuscan hills, sharing the genesis of their musical passion, their relationship with fashion, and their future projects.

When playing became our job, we had difficulty choosing a musical genre because we were influenced by so many worlds, and they all gave us something.

B: Hi, we're Demetra and Bianca, and today we're bringing you into our studio.
D: This is where our ideas take shape and transform into music.

Tell us about yourselves and what you do?

D: We're two DJs, but first and foremost, we're friends.
B: We met on the school steps when we were 13.
D: Yes, I noticed her because she was wearing a sparkly pink cap with "princess" written on it, and I went to ask her where she got it.
B: And from then on, we never parted ways, because that same day we were already at my house together.
D: I can say you're the longest relationship of my life, hands down.
B: Absolutely.

What genre of music do you feel you belong to?

D: Well, we feel we belong to the world of house music with all its nuances. Our musical identity has definitely been discovered over time.
B: We've always loved all kinds of music. As kids, we listened to Paul Anka, for example, so super '60s. And we used to steal cassette tapes from our parents. We liked it so much that we wore them around our necks, even though they couldn't be played at that point. We already liked to stand out - from there our passion for fashion was born too.

Which artists have mainly influenced your musical journey?

B: Actually, the artists who have influenced our musical journey are diverse; initially, it was the whole indie rock scene. We played indie rock, and in our DJ sets, artists like Gang of Four, Talking Heads, or The Smiths couldn't be missing.
D: And then we got closer to the world of house music, as I said, and we started consuming records by Kerri Chandler, Paul Johnson, Frankie Knuckles. When playing became our job, we had difficulty choosing because we were influenced by so many worlds, and they all gave us something.

Speaking of fashion, how would you describe your style?

B: To describe our style, if we had to choose an adjective, we could define it as versatile because we can switch from a romantic, chic look to a totally rock or even androgynous look.
D: Fashion for us absolutely reflects our mood, and it all depends on how we feel that day.
B: Tell me how you dress, and I'll tell you how you feel.

The perfect look for a DJ set?

B: The perfect look for a DJ set is how we're dressed today. We're very different but super aligned, even in life. We love wearing high heels, but it always ends up with us barefoot behind the console because we tend to kick them off somewhere.

Can you give us a preview of your future projects?

D: Well, as we were saying earlier, we've always loved underground music, but there was nothing that excited us more than dancing to '90s and 2000s music. And we wanted to combine the two. In fact, the project we're working on now is precisely this: creating a sound where we find the tracks we love the most from those years and remix them in a modern, tech-house key. They'll be out soon!
B: Yes. So we'll keep you updated, and stay tuned. We can't wait.

Bye, TheCorner! Bye!
